Event photography has to be shot in location. This includes parties, festivals, weddings and concerts. The photographers aim to show emotion, which is often happiness through their images. This type of location photography can be seen as documentary, as some photographers don't stage their images.  The photographer has to be confident with new people and working with them, they have to look out for the perfect moment. This means they will need a fast shutter speed at all times, unless they want a slow shutter speed for a staged image.

 

 

Fashion:

 

 

 

 

 

Fashion photography can be shot in the studio or out on location. Most fashion shots include the main focus being on the model so the background is less detailed and is sometimes plain. This type of photography is mostly staged with the photographer planning the camera angle, lighting and pose of the model. This means they will need some awareness of this before shooting. Fashion shots, in location, can be shot anywhere. This includes rural and urban areas. Fashion photographers will need to think about the land, will they need permission to photograph on it?  They will need to think about location lighting and the health and safety included. They will need to think about poses, emotions and what they are trying to make the viewer experience. Usually, the photographers are trying to portray the emotion and to sell the fashions.

 

 

Sports:

 

 

 

 

Sport photography is always shot on location (not the studio). The locations include stadiums and dirt tracks and often during water sports, in lakes. Sport photographers often try to convey the athletes passion and love for their sport. They need to think about health and safety and when would be appropriate to use flash. They also need a fast shutter speed to capture the movement and emotion of the player. They also, like all photographers, need to think about angles, compositions and properties of their images. Most sport images are documentary and are not staged.

 

 

 

Documentary:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Documentary photographers are always shooting in location, whether this is in rural or Urban areas.

They capture real situations and every day scenarios. They often use a fast shutter speed so they can snap and walk away. This is as the perfect moment may be anytime and they need to increase their chances of getting the shot. Documentary photographers need to think about laws and rules when photographing on the streets, they also need to think about health and safety and permission to use land, if its private. These images often try to show the viewer things that they dont usually see. Such as the image above with the masks. They often try to show emotions and the how the city is, eg busy or quiet.

 

 

 

 

 

Letter & Image Task:

For this task, we were told to go out and take a few pictures about our theme (holiday). Once we came back, we were told to produce a letter, or shape (in my instance) via photoshop. All these images where then combined to create an alphabet.

After shooting I decided to edit the most fashionable, eye catching and better image. I decided to not do the letter to this image, as it looked better without. Below shows before and after editing.

How I edited this image: 

I decided to apply simple edits on this image. First I adjusted the levels, to make the image slightly brighter, but I still wanted to keep the skin tone a realistic tone. Next, opening an adjustment tab, I adjusted the saturation and made sure the lips and hair were bright and attracting, these levels are shown in screencap 1. I then inverted the layer and painted on the saturation, screencap 2 shows the inverted layer mask.

Analysis of this image: 

This image shows a girl, looking up to the camera. Her hair is spread out and she is lying on a bed of travel brochure pages. This was the link to the theme of holiday. This image is a colour portrait, which can be seen as fashionable. The bright, natural lighting suggests to the viewer that the image was taken in summer, also the models outfit and smile also suggests this. This again links to holidays. 

This image had a fast shutter speed, as it was windy and i wanted to freeze any movement in the pages. I also had a narrow depth of field, to focus on the model. The way that the pages are mostly white, also doesn't distract the reader. This also means that they focus on the model. 

I really like this image as the emotion of the model makes the viewer smile. I also think that the less detailed background adds emphasis to the image and adds an extra layer of meaning to the image. This is the thoughts of holidays and 'happy' times. 

My shaped image: 

As my theme is not a letter, like others, I was given a shape to change my image into. This was as triangle with a circle in. I thought about adding two images, one in the circle and one in the triangle. However, once I created the image below, I thought adding another image would make it over detailed and too busy. 

I particually like this image as it looks professional and I think it could be part of an advertisement or logo. 

The image shows a bunch of placed travel brochure pages, which have been spread out. The image has been cropped into a triangle with a circle in. This reminds me of the letter 'A' without the bottom. This, like stated above, makes me think of it included in an advertisement. 

Looking at the image, the side of the triangles are not perfect and are a little off centre. However, I like this as it adds a unique and quirky feel to the image. 

I also like the way there is two different shades of white. The one in the triangle is brighter, where the background is more cream. This directs the viewers attention to the triangle, which adds to the image.

Next, I plan to experiment with writing the word 'Holiday' into this image. 

Holiday image - Black background: 

This image shows the word holiday which is filled with travel brochures.  Again, this image reminds me of a part of an advertisement or logo. 

The background of the image is black, which I think adds to the image. This is because the pages are white and the bright colours of the images on the pages stand out. I like this in the image.  I also want to experiment with having a white background, just to see the effect on the viewer and its aesthetic properties. 

The Proposal:

In my images, I intend to photograph the fashions and every day wear for summer holidays. This will include bikinis, full swimsuits, shorts and vest tops, summer hats, sunglasses and long dresses. This will link to the theme of fun and games and the second theme of holiday as generally, time away in hot countries are fun and are a break from stressful everyday life. I will be creating a front cover, so will need one image to have the famous I-D wink or right eye cover. This could be by a hat, or the model winking. For the assignment, I will need to explore different locations, so this will include shooting in the studio, on a rural, plain scene, perhaps a field and also, if possible, a beach setting.  I am also considering having a comparison between modern fashion (ie - bikinis and short shorts and sunglasses) and retro swimwear.

For this set of images, I am going to use my digital camera. This is a Canon EOS 1100D. My images will be shot in colour. This is as I want the bright, vibrant and eye catching appeal in my front cover.

These images will be portraits and more specifically will be fashion. They will be used for a front cover, and two double pages spread. This also means they will be seen in a magazine and there will be some writing that further explores the images.For my locations, other than booking the studio for my preferred time, I won’t need any permission.  The models for this assignment will need to be contacted, I want to use one of my friends as both me and her will feel more comfortable. It also means that she can be contacted whenever and with ease. I will need to figure out a good time for us to shoot.

The only access ill need is to the studio and possibly location lighting. The location lighting should be there and available when I shoot, however it means I will need someone to help with cables and positioning. 
 

I can see a few issues with this plan, one being tripping over leads and lighting being damaged while shooting in a location. This means I will need someone to guard and warn any passers-by about the cables. I will also need to focus on the temperature of the model, as the weather isn't brilliant inside and the fashions maybe very light.
 

I will need to research the front covers and double page spreads in many magazines, including I-D. I will need to notice the similarities and the differences. I need to look at angles, outfits and locations before shooting. I also need to research different fashion photographers and to gain inspiration from them.

For this set of images, I will have to be placing on a magazine front cover. I will do some sketches first, the logo will need to be at the top of the image and there will need to be a title of 'A-Z of Fun and Games'. I will also need to think about the content and articles in the double page spreads. Maybe a interview with the model? Again, I will be doing sketches before putting together.

Timetable:

Week 1-  Introduction and Initial Ideas- Start Blog- Write proposal - locate models and outfits - list all location photography - Do any extra tasks

Week 2- Begin to look at materials and research artists. Plan a shoot and begin to annotate and look at reshoots - do any extra tasks.

Week 3- Finish all research - shoot in the studio - edit - annotate - do any tasks.

Week 4- Edit all images -  begin to place on magazine front - think about double spread. - Reshoot if needed.

Week 5- Make sure all images and double spreads are done - annotate anything left.

Week 6-  Evaluation - Critique - General finishing off

For this assignment, I have been asked to produce a minimum of 4 images. These images will be used for a front cover, which has the I-D magazine logo on and the title 'A-Z of fun and games'. You also need to produce 2 double page spreads, which incorporate your images. The front cover will need to have the official 'i-D wink'. This is where the right eye is either covered or closed. 
I will need to do many different shoots, all in different locations, including the studio. I will need to think about my audience and kit needed whilst also thinking about the composition and visual aspects of the images. I will need to be experimental with my layouts and types of images, but must keep my theme running. 

My theme:  
My theme is 'Holiday'. This was given by a lucky dip, after a task where we named one thing, for each letter of the alphabet, about fun and games. 

Initial Ideas: 
Holiday wear - bikinis, swimming costumes, hats, sunglasses, shorts, long and light summer dresses. Straw hats to cover the eye and vest tops. 
^ Here I could do a comparison between old 'retro' fashion and modern.
^This is linked to fun and games, as commonly holidays are seen as fun. The fashion also fits with the brief. 

Postcards - dress made of postcards, a stamp covering the eye for the 'wink'.

Cocktails - bright colours, fiestas, spanish holidays, Caribbean.
